Amber Ward Colour & Cutting
A stylist finishing a client's cut beside the tall windows of the Amber Ward studio

A six-chair colour studio

Hair that still looks deliberate eight weeks later.

Studio hours
Tuesday to Saturday, 9am–6pm. Late finish Thursday at 8.30pm.
Colour consultations
Fifteen minutes, free, and required before any first lightening service.
How we hold time
One client per stylist per slot. Nobody is left sitting with colour going cold.

What we do, how long it takes, what it costs

Hair below the shoulder, very dense hair, or hair with old colour on the ends takes more product and more time. We confirm the final figure with you at the consultation, before anything is mixed.

Sectioning before anything is mixed — the slowest part of the appointment, and the part that decides the result.

02 — The Ward method

Three steps, every appointment

Nothing here is a package. It is simply the order we work in, so you know what the chair time is being spent on.

STEP 01

We look at your hair in daylight

Dry, unstyled, by the window. Salon spotlights flatter colour and hide banding, so we judge tone and condition where it is honest, then agree what is achievable today versus across two visits.

STEP 02

We build in layers, not in one hit

Lift, then tone, then cut to the lightened shape. Working in that order means the ends are cut after they have moved, so nothing has to be corrected at the end of a three-hour appointment.

STEP 03

We teach you the regrowth

Before you leave we show you where the colour will shift first, which week it will start to look different, and the two things worth doing at home. You book the next visit only when you need it.

03 — The chairs

Who you’ll sit with

Request a stylist by name on the booking form. If they are full that week we will tell you rather than quietly moving you.

Short shapes, fringes and anything that has to hold its line as it grows. Cuts dry, almost always freehand.

Joss Adeyemi

Curl & texture

Coils, waves and transitioning hair. Joss cuts curl by curl and will show you the finish without a single brush.

04 — Before you book

Colour questions worth settling first

The seven things clients ask at the basin, answered here instead so you can decide which service to request.

How much lighter can my hair safely go in one appointment?

Two to three levels on healthy, uncoloured hair is comfortable. Beyond that the hair is usually fine but the tone is not — you get the lift and lose the evenness.

If your reference photo is four or more levels away from where you are now, plan two appointments six to eight weeks apart. It costs the same in total and the ends survive it.

I have used box dye. Can I still have balayage?

Often yes, but not on the first visit. Box colour sits unevenly and can hold metallic salts that react with lightener, so we patch test a small section and watch it.

If the test behaves, we start with a softer, higher placement that avoids the darkest bands, then push brighter next time.

How often will I actually need to come back?

Root tint every four to six weeks, because the line is literal. Half-head foils every ten to twelve. Balayage every four to five months, with a gloss in between if you want it to look fresh.

Cuts hold their shape roughly eight weeks for short styles and twelve to sixteen for long ones.

What is the difference between a gloss and a toner?

A toner cancels something you do not want — usually yellow or orange left after lightening. It is corrective and it is part of the colour service.

A gloss adds shine and depth to hair that is already the right level. It is the cheap, quick thing that makes a four-month-old balayage look recent.

Should I bring a photo, and how will you read it?

Please do, and bring two or three rather than one. We read the placement and the depth at the root, not the filter.

It also helps to bring one picture of something you definitely do not want. That tends to narrow the brief faster than anything else.

How do I keep brass out between appointments?

Warmth mostly comes from water and sun, not shampoo. Rinse cooler, and rinse the chlorine or seawater out the same day rather than the next morning.

A pigmented shampoo once a week is enough; twice turns pale blonde grey-blue. We will tell you which one suits your tone before you buy anything.

My hair is fine and goes flat after colour. Is that avoidable?

Usually it is a product weight problem, not a colour problem. Fine hair collapses under conditioner left mid-length to root.

We will also keep the lightener off the first centimetre at the crown, which preserves the grip your roots need to hold any volume at all.
